General Information
FACTORY MUTUAL
UNDERWRITERS' LABORATORIES, MINE SAFETY & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION
FACTORY MUTUAL (FM) and UNDERWRITERS' LABORATORIES (UL)
Equipment approved by Factory Mutual and Underwriters' Laboratories as Intrinsically Safe and/or Non-incendive is generally accepted by code enforcing authorities for use in hazardous locations. Intrinsically Safe equipment is suitable for Division 1 & 2 locations. Non-incendive equipment is only suitable for Division 2 locations. Hazardous Locations are defined in Article 500 of the National Electrical Code (NEC) available from the National Fire Protection Association as NFPA/70.
HAZARDOUS (CLASSIFIED) LOCATIONS
Locations are classified depending on the properties of the flammable vapors, liquids or gases, or combustible dusts or fibers, which may be present and the likelihood that a flammable or combustible concentration or quantity is present.
The nature and degrees of a hazard existing at a particular location is denoted by specifying the location as being of Class I, II or III; Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, or G; and Division 1 or 2. The classes define the generic nature of the materials and Division the degree of hazard in the location.
CLASS I locations, flammable gas or vapor, are subdivided into Groups A, B, C and D. Article 500 of the NEC Provides a list of flammable gas or vapor within each group.
CLASS II locations, combustible dust, are subdivided into Groups E, F, and G. Group E contains metal dusts including aluminum and magnesium; Group F includes the coke, coal and charcoal dusts and Group G, the grain dusts.
CLASS III locations contain easily ignitable fibers or fillings in quantities to produce ignitable mixtures. Easily ignitable fibers and fillings include rayon, cotton, isle, jute, hemp, okum, and other similar materials.
DIVISION 1: Locations where the particular hazardous materials are present in the air in potentially flammable concentrations continuously, frequently, or intermittently under normal operating conditions. Division 1 approved equipment can also be used in Division 2 locations.
DIVISION 2: Locations, which might become hazardous in the event of a mechanical breakdown, accidental failure, or the abnormal operation of equipment.
TEMPERATURE CODES
In addition to being approved for use in a particular Class, Group and Division, equipment must be marked with Maximum Safe Operation Temperatures or Temperature Codes if a surface temperature exceeds 100°F. This further defines the acceptability of equipment for a specified location depending on the ignition temperature of the material in the location.
UNDERWRITERS’ LABORATORIES LISTED PRODUCTS UL
Listing is offered as an alternate to FM Approval for customers with UL preference. Most code enforcing authorities will accept FM or UL Approval.
MINE SAFETY and HEALTH ADMINSTRATION (MSHA)
MSHA is an agency of the federal government who employs Intrinsically Safe testing techniques to approve products for use in gassy mines or tunnels. The tests are similar to those used by FM and UL but limited to methane gas and coal type dust, which are, found in mine environments. Products approved for use by MSHA require a special identification label with the MSHA logo, approval number, product model and the words Permissible Radio Device.
BATTERIES
Factory Mutual, Underwriters’ Laboratories, and Min Safety and Health Administration ALL REQUIRE THAT ONLY THE BATTERIES THEY SPECIFY BE USED WITH APPROVED RADIOS. Use of non-specified batteries voids these approvals. Batteries approved by one agency are not acceptable to another agency. The approved batteries are specified on the radio labels.
OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES
Options are Motorola’s means of ordering the addition or omission of internal radio features, and of ordering the addition, omission, or substitution of accessories. Most internal features and alternate accessories ordered by options are included in the FM, UL, and MSHA approvals. Accessory kits used in option are also separately listed for convenience in ordering spares and replacements. Both options and accessory kits, which are FM, UL, or MSHA approved, are identified on equipment listing pages in this section of the price book by these symbols.
SPECIAL PRODUCTION (SP) MODELS
These are models with variations or modifications of internal features, accessories, or both which are beyond the scope of option handling. MOST SP MODELS ARE NOT FM, UL or MSHA APPROVED. Contact product marketing for details of approval versus SP modification.
RADIO ONLY MODELS
Portable Products are offered both as complete package models including antenna, battery, carrying accessory, and some models as "radio only" models less all these accessories. Factory Mutual approvals apply to specific models using appropriate batteries. APPROVED audio accessories and internal options may be substituted or added as required.
