Effective July 7, 2025: The CN model of the APX 8500 is available.  The CN brings the introduction of 5GHz WiFi and the broadband protection feature for the 7/800MHz band.  Along with the introduction of the CN version of the APX 8500 mobile, the intent to cancel for the AN model will be last orders of September 30, 2025 and last ship date of December 31, 2025.  Aftermarket support of the AN models will follow the timing of the CN as AN radios will continue to be serviced with CN parts.

Beginning September 2023 APX radios can be ordered with the New Feature/Latest release or the Baseline release firmware. The Baseline release is defined as a single major software release (i.e. 202X.1) to ship from the factory for a 1 year duration. The first major release each year will be the Baseline Release.  A New Feature Release is defined as the second and third major releases each year (202X.2 and 202X.3) and is required for customers to access new feature content and/or products.  New Feature releases contain the current year’s Baseline content as well as content from the previous New Feature release.

IMPORTANT! Radios that are ordered via COF must add the Baseline Release option (QA09113) if the Baseline firmware is desired.  If the Baseline option (QA09113) is not added to COF orders, radios will ship with the Latest Release and cannot be rolled back to the Baseline Release.  Most quotes and orders should keep the default Baseline Firmware (QA09113) unless a customer desires new functionality only provided in a New Feature release. More information about the Baseline and New Feature Release strategy can be found in MTN-0111-23-NA.

Effective October 11th, 2021: APX Mobile One Touch Feature will be enhanced and integrated with DEK’s Status Message functionalities. Users will benefit from the ability to program and assign alias Status Messages on the APX Control Head display. One Touch Feature G683 pricing will increase from $75 to $125. The APX 8500 model comes with OneTouch by default. 

Effective October 11th, 2021: A new Ethernet faceplate with RJ45 connector will be available on APX 8500 MP.  Users will be able to connect the Sierra Wireless MG90 router directly to the APX 8500 MP using an RJ45 Ethernet cable. The Ethernet Faceplate is an orderable option and available at $250. All APX 8500 MP Mobile orders booked after October 11th, 2021 will continue to ship with the current Standard Faceplate at $0 cost unless the ADD Ethernet Faceplate option (GA01787) is selected.  Aftermarket Retrofit Kit upgrades will also be supported (HN001998A01). The Ethernet Faceplate only supports APX 8500 MP connected to a Sierra Wireless MG90 router.

Effective July 19th 2021 All APX Mobile Orders Booked After July 19th 2021: The APX Mobile Bluetooth feature will be available on APX 8500 and Enhanced “BN” APX Mobiles. The E5 Control Head will support COTS Bluetooth and MPP Bluetooth Pairing. The O7, O3 & O2 Control Heads will support COTS Bluetooth ONLY. Bluetooth will be included on all APX Mobile orders and will be reflected in the Flashcode unless DELETE Bluetooth option (QA05336) is used to remove it. A Wifi/Bluetooth antenna will be required to enable the Bluetooth functionality. Flashport upgrades will also be supported. Bluetooth is not supported on the APX Consolette and APX Dual Radio.

Effective October 5th, 2020: All U.S. orders will require an encryption selection. QA05751 “Clear Radio No ADP” has become an orderable option with a $0 dollar cost. G193/Q667 ADP only is also available at $0. Please see encryption section for AES and other encryption options that come with ADP. Units shipped with QA05751 are not field-upgradable for encryption and any changes will require units to be sent to a depot. Further ordering changes are captured in the Encryption Algorithm and Multikey sections below.

Effective Effective August 1, 2020: The O5 control head (option G442 and kit H1904) has been canceled and replaced by the E5 GA01670 and H1930

Effective August 26, 2019: Multi-System OTAR (GA01620) is available. Users who frequently move from one secure system to another will benefit from the ease and speed that radio keys are shared and updated. Our Multi-System Over-the-Air Rekeying (Multi-System OTAR) feature supports over-the-air-rekeying with up to 19 different secure systems, key sharing across profiles and seamless migration of fielded radios. The customer must order OTAR W/ MULTIKEY as a prerequisite for MS-OTAR.

APX 8500 HP/MP ORDERS WITH DVRS MSU ACTIVATION (GA00631) 

When GA00631 MSU is selected the all band antenna GA01513 must be purchased separately as AN000131A02.

GA00631 MSU and QA00631 PSU are mutually exclusive and will require depot to change from one to the other.

Please be aware that depending upon the equipment installation and frequency usage, additional equipment may be required to assure optimal performance between the APX™8500 and DVR/VRX1000. More specifically, when using an APX™8500 with an antenna (all band or with a triplexer) that includes the same frequency range as the DVRS / VXR1000, this additional equipment will help to assure the desired performance between these two products. This applies to all sales that combine an APX™8500 with a DVR/VRX1000 as well as any replacements of an existing MSU (Mobile Subscriber Unit) with the APX™8500 where the DVR/VRX1000 may already be deployed.

Multi-Control Head Options

The APX 8500 mobile can support up to four control heads on a single transceiver. This allows control of a single APX 8500 transceiver from two different control head locations.

Multi-Control Head options require Remote Mount.

When ordering a multi-control head option, only one type of control head can be selected.

Only available with O2, E5, O7 Control Heads.

Multi-control head options require an equal number of microphones, speakers, and CAN cables.

Multi-control head options are incompatible with the multi-radio options.

Please note: Audio Pod was discontinued in 2022 and the ability to perform speaker toggling between dual control heads is no longer an available option.

4. RF Antenna (Required)

The APX 8500 has one QMA style LMR antenna port. Any additional connections will require vehicle multiplexer EQ000103A02 that allows up to 3 QMA antenna connections. We will offer this multiplexer and Adapters through our Parts Division.

Examples are Mini U to QMA CB000091A03, QMA to QMA CB000091A02 and SMA to QMA CB000091A04. Aftermarket Antennas are certified for use on the APX 8500 but do require CB000091A02.

Dual Radio Operation Options

The APX Dual Radio Feature offers the capability to control TWO (2) APX8500, APX7500, APX6500, or APX6500Li mobile radios from ONE (1) O7 or E5 control head.  APX Dual Radio allows for mixing and matching of radios across tiers (i.e. APX 8500 with APX 6500) and power levels (High Power with Mid Power).

Each radio in an APX Dual Radio system must be ordered independently.

The mobiles in a dual radio solution can be single or dual band.  Both radios can be on the same or different frequency bands.

One radio must be ordered with the Primary Radio option (GA01113) and the other with the Secondary Radio option (GA01117).  This will include both the SW and HW required for dual radio operation.

Although each radio must be ordered as either a Primary or Secondary radio, each radio can be configured to work as a Primary, Secondary, or a Standalone radio.

Only one speaker can be connected to the control head and it will play audio from the primary radio.  A 30 ft. speaker extension cable is included on the secondary radio to connect the second speaker directly to the secondary radio.  If a longer cable is needed, a 131 ft. version can be purchased from AAD (part # HKN6251)

The Dual Radio feature is incompatible with the multi-control head options.

Dual Radio Options

The Dual Radio trunnion is new to accommodate the smaller form factor of the Enhanced APX 6500. HLN7045A, offered on APX 6500 AN models, is not compatible with the Enhanced APX 6500. HLN7045B is compatible will all Enhanced APX 6500 and APX 8500 models.

System Enhancement Options (Optional)

The APX 8500 comes standard with G170 Radio Trace and G683 Trunked One Touch

The following options are optional and will provide additional capabilities, if required.

For advanced programming solutions including features like batch programming, programming over WiFi or LTE, Motorola hosted or Cloud solutions, you will need to order one of the below tools. You may select between 1-5 years of access. RadioCentral and RadioManagement (MSI Hosted) are ordered on a per device, per year basis. The pricing in the table below is per device, per year.
